The day before had been an epic fail. After two weeks of long nights alone in bed—again—and the mounting frustration of receiving curt replies to his texts, Mike missed his best friend. Hoping to get closer to Mel, he had volunteered his Saturday, one he should have spent reading the latest awful manuscript dumped on him by Rob, to help her with that project for her mom. He’d had a front row seat to her issues with her parents for many years now, but Mel’s willingness to keep trying to be a good daughter was a sign of their importance to her. In spite of their tendency to reel her in and push her away.

Having been raised by two parents who were consistently there for each of their three sons, Mike had pitied his friend’s upbringing. Not that he’d ever tell her that. She had turned out to be strong and capable, with or without parental guidance or reliable support, and he admired her for it. But he wondered sometimes if she were too strong and capable, pushing others away, keeping a distance as she’d been taught. Her insistence on never marrying or even committing to a serious relationship had been highlighted during the argument with her mother. As the man who wanted to be with her, it was worrisome.

Whether or not he’d be able to break down her walls and see if they could have a romantic relationship, Mike was her best friend first and last. As such, he owed her an apology for not having her back yesterday. Up at the asscrack of dawn, he’d read through half of his homework and was actually surprised by the quality of the story; Rob must’ve accidentally let a decent submission slip through his greedy fingers. A little after seven, he figured his early-rising bestie would be up, too.
